In conversation with Trail Runners, Ashtons Franchise Consultant Rob Hall caught up with Ash Tuck, the managing director. This is a dive into the inspiring story of how Trail Runners transformed from a local club into an exciting franchise opportunity.
Ash shared how a passion for trail running, community, and mental wellness sparked rapid growth and opened doors to franchising. With Ashtons’ guidance, Trail Runners is now set on an ambitious path to become the UK’s leading trail running network. Ash reveals his vision for the future, what makes Trail Runners unique, and his top tips for new franchisors.
Basic information
Why They’re Great: Trail Runners stands out as the first organisation to provide a structured, routine schedule of weekly trail running sessions in the UK. Their unique approach to outdoor fitness fills a market gap by blending rigorous physical training with the mental health benefits of being in nature. Beyond fitness, they create a sense of community, positioning themselves not only as an athletic club but as a supportive, close-knit network that values mental wellness and fun.

Ashtons Franchise consultant Rob Hall chatted with Ash – these are some of the questions asked:
What’s the Story Behind Franchising Trail Runners?
Ash Tuck, the current director, initially joined Trail Runners to support the original founder, handling compliance and operational needs while still managing his own business coaching athletes. When the founder stepped away, Ash saw an opportunity to build upon the existing success and envisioned franchising as a viable expansion model. With a successful initial run in Bristol, Ash piloted a new club in Bath to test the franchising approach. This “unofficial” franchise validated the demand and feasibility of the model, prompting Ash to reach out to Ashtons Franchise Consulting to structure and formalise the expansion nationwide.
Ash said, “Our plan is to be the number one go-to trail running organisation for the UK”.
How Did You Build Your Knowledge on Franchising?
Coming from a coaching and gym management background, Ash valued high-quality information and the importance of strong partnerships. He first researched franchising consultants online, focusing on reputable names mentioned by the British Franchise Association. Through Ashtons’ resources and client testimonials, Ash felt a connection with their values of ethical business practices and saw them as a perfect fit for Trail Runners. The partnership with Ashtons has been instrumental in navigating the complex landscape of franchising, providing expert guidance on everything from operational frameworks to recruitment processes.
How Did You Find It Working with Ashtons?
The collaboration with Ashtons has exceeded Ash’s expectations. Although initially aware that Ashtons might be a premium option, Ash has felt it was worth every investment. Ashtons brought both the technical expertise and a deep partnership-driven approach, helping Ash navigate the unfamiliar aspects of franchising. Ash credits Ashtons for their hands-on assistance, particularly in setting up essential processes that he might not have considered otherwise.
Ash said, “You could tell that everything was really top quality, done methodically, ethically as well, and again kind of just aligned with everything that I’ve ever done”.
What’s Your Best Tip for a New Would-Be Franchisor?
Ash recommends targeting existing contacts as an initial strategy for finding franchisees. This approach capitalises on “warm leads,” people already familiar with the brand and its value, thus shortening the recruitment journey. Ash also emphasises the importance of defining a clear profile for the ideal franchisee. For Trail Runners, that means seeking individuals who are not only trail running enthusiasts but also community-driven and personable. Ash’s advice to new franchisors in terms of finding franchisees is to try to focus on targeted, quality engagement with the right people.
What Is Next for Trail Runners?
Trail Runners aims to establish itself as the leading trail running organisation in the UK. By expanding its franchise network, they hope to create a national presence that mirrors their community-focused approach. Thus allowing runners from all over the UK to participate in local clubs that feel like home. Additionally, Ash sees trail running’s growing popularity as an opportunity to promote the sport’s physical and mental health benefits. The end goal? To be the “go-to” trail running brand, helping people improve both fitness and mental well-being through community-driven outdoor experiences.
Trail Runners isn’t just expanding clubs – it’s fostering an inclusive community for trail running enthusiasts nationwide.
